Yeast cells expressing the chimeric MTHFR, or the full-length Arabidopsis MTHFR, in place of the wild-type Met13p, grew normally. However, cells expressing the chimeric enzyme hyperaccumulated SAM more than 140-fold relative to the wild-type cells. Methionine levels were also elevated.
