ANDREW DIKE HUGHES

Education:

University of South Carolina, B.S. Chemistry

Hometown:

Spartanburg, S.C.

Research Experience:

At USC (the original USC) I worked with doctors Ken and Linda Shimizu on various projects, but most successfully on the synthesis and binding properties of bis-urea macrocycles that self-assemble into nanotubes.

“Self-Assembled Nanotubes that Reversibly Bind Acetic Acid Guests” Shimizu, L. S.; Hughes, A. D.; Smith, M. D.; Davis, M. J.; Zhang, B. P.; Zur Loye, H.-C.; Shimizu, K.  D. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2003, 125, 14972-14973.

Under Dr. Anslyn’s tutelage I have completed a study on the phenomenon of cooperative binding in a synthetic cationic host.  I am currently developing a fluorescent pattern-based sensing application for nitrated explosive analytes, and a colorimetric sensor for enantiomeric excess in simple alcohols.

“A Cationic Host Displaying Positive Cooperativity in Water” Hughes, A. D.; Anslyn, E. V.  Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA. 2007, 104(16), 6538-6543.
