Our lab is housed in the new Moffett Molecular Biology Building, located in the heart of the UT-Austin campus.

Here is our single molecule detection setup, which uses total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy to allow detection of about 100 RNA or protein molecules individually and simultaneously.
On the other hand, We also use more traditional methods ... like polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Catalytic activity of RNAs provides a very powerful experimental probe for formation of the native state, and this catalytic activity is conveniently and rapidly monitored by denaturing electrophoresis.

With all those gels, our phosphorimager (Molecular Dynamics Storm 820) gets used extensively. To the right of the phosphorimager is another heavily-used piece of equipment, our UV/Vis spectrophotometer (Beckman DU800).
