Mechanisms of Electron Transfer Reactions

Professor Nathan L. Bauld

We have developed cation radical probes for the detection of electron transfer reactions involving cation radicals. Recently , substituent effects in reactions of aryl vinyl ethers and sulfides have been found to provide a clear distinction between electrophilic additions to these substrates and electron transfer reactions involving their cation radicals. Further, the ET reactions have been found, in some cases, to occur via a polar mechanism .Studies designed to distinguish between outer sphere, inner sphere, and polar mechanisms of ET are developing nicely.
